OPENING OF THE MADRID METRO CENTENARY EXHIBITION. THE FOOTPRINTS OF THE METRO
On Wednesday, 16 October, the Madrid Metro centenary exhibition “The Footprints of the Metro” was opened to the public.
In 2018, CITEF (Railway Technology Research Centre) was awarded a Madrid Metro project to conduct a HISTORIOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS AND VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION WITH HIGH-IMPACT DIGITAL RECREATION TECHNIQUES. One of the fruits of this project is now being exhibited at the ABC Museum.
The exhibition offers a historiographic reconstruction of the first two metro lines built in 1919 and 1923, including an analysis of the city, below and above ground, at the time of construction. It also pays homage to Antonio Palacios, the architect behind the first two lines.
In addition, visitors can examine a virtual reconstruction of the first series of railway vehicles, as well as a four-metre model of the first train to operate the underground system. This model was created using 3D printing based on digital models.
CITEF carried out this project with the help of a multidisciplinary team of architects directed by Javier Ortega, a Professor at the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), Dr Susana Olivares, an expert in Antonio Palacios, and a group of virtual reality specialists, the result of whose work can now be enjoyed at the ABC Museum, together with a collection of images from the period selected from the ABC archive.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Vice President of the Community of Madrid, the Minister for Transport of the region, the CEO and other executives of the Madrid Metro, the curators of the exhibition, and the Director of CITEF, in addition to other authorities and the families of the promotors and developers of the first Madrid Metro lines.
The exhibition is open to the public until 8 December.
